"How do you capture the spirit of a memory in a way that feels personal and recognizable to everyone?

That’s the question we ask ourselves every day. Luckily, we’re not the only ones with the answers! We speak to anywhere from 30 to 100 people for every candle we develop, visiting local areas, collecting samples, and even extracting scents from food. We’ve discussed childhood memories with local Texans, why books smell so great with veteran librarians, the flora of Central Park with New York horticulturalists, and the finer points of donuts with Dunkin’ superfans. And that's just the start of our process.

History

A group of friends in New York, all from various locations, were missing home and began gathering scents that reminded them of their hometown. In February of 2016, Homesick Candles was born. Whether it be the the scent of a thunderstorm in Alabama, or the barbecue in North Carolina Smoky Mountains they've made a familiar scent for you. “We developed our first states—Texas, Georgia, and Florida—from childhood memories of the places we were familiar with, mostly states we had grown up in,” Schmiedehaus explains. “We looked for, and continue to look for, scents of plants, foods, environments, and even clothing that are relatable and universally enjoyable.” (Vogue). Since starting the business, it has grown to over $1 million in revenue on it's Shopify platform.
